“Indian Super-foods”

Globalisation has been influencing Indians, and their food habits in a drastic manner. The term “Super-food” is a completely new concept in the market which is said to offer more nutrients, more energy and more anti-oxidants and less calories.

The “Super-foods” gained popularity because of the creative marketing techniques from the West. India is a country, rich with number of super-foods which are losing their importance day by day, because of this Western influence and the misconceptions which have emerged because of that.

Experts say, it’s not the brand, it’s the quality of the food that matters. It is advised to eat locally grown fruits and food and consume seasonal fruits and vegetables.

With this post, I am introducing “The Indian Super-foods Series” #TISS, in which I will discuss about the Super-foods which the Indian subcontinent is bestowed with.

Each week I will be posting about a Super-food, their enriching properties their various health benefits and at the end of the post I will give a recipe regarding the related Super-food.

To do the honours, the First Super-food of them all, would be the King of Fruits, “Mango”:

Mango is considered to be the King of Fruits, because of its variety and varied flavours. India is the largest producer of mango in the world. Rich in lots of nutrients and health benefits, it is used in versatile ways. Both raw and ripe mangoes have their own place in the Indian kitchen.

Mango stands as a super-food because of its nutrients: Protiens, Vitamin A, Vitamin B6, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Calcium, Magnesium, good amount of Potassium which helps in lowering the blood pressure. It is helpful in melting kidney stones. It also is said to have zero cholestrol and minimal fat, so that if consumed in moderation, can also be eaten by people with any cardiovascular issues. Overall, Mango is beneficial for eyes, bones, immunity boost-up, heart, kidney stones, blood circulation.

Every food is controversial in some way or the other. One must choose to come out of the myths and know the benefits of having seasonal fruits like mango. Every region has its own version of recipes and drinks.

Here is Mango milkshake for you all. Simple yet a great substitute to artificial flavoured drinks and colas.

#nutritiongoals.

Milk – 200 ml

Ripe mangoes 2

Cardamom powder 1 tbs

Cashews

Almonds

Pistachios

Black raisins

*Sugar is optional. Because it is seasonal, it would taste good even without sugar as the dry fruits and the natural sugars of the fruit would make the drink sweet enough on its own.

Cut mangoes into pieces, add cardamom powder, make a smooth paste. Now add milk according to your needed consistency. Garnish with dry fruits. Serve chilled in the evenings.

So enjoy this seasonal super-food without any guilt.

“Eat healthy, think right”.
